lawyers hash out legal ownership, with the Wicks dead. And until then we'd have to get a restraining order to show cause to test the well. Hell could break loose while the goddamn red tape holds it up."
While Waite talked, Terry looked blankly out the window. She had receded into a private place from where, Calvin feared, he might never bring her back. She surely didn't need this.
"Which means sometime next week"
Calvin cut him off. "Dennis, thanks for the information, but I think we should talk another time." He didn't care anymore. Not about the well or the conspiracy or coverup. He just wanted his wife back. She was all he had left. All that mattered now.
Waite looked up at him, then at Terry. He nodded. "Sorry." He opened the door. "I'll call tomorrow."
When he left, Calvin turned to his wife. "Anything I can get you?"
She shook her head, then mechanically removed her clothes and dropped them on the floor and pulled up the covers, her back to Calvin.

Calvin was asleep when the lights snapped on. Through fuzzy slits he saw Terry getting dressed.
"What are you doing?"
"Going out."
"Out? It's one-thirty."
She continued to dress.
"Terry."
"I'm having bad dreams."
"There's no place to walk around here."
"I'll take the car."
He watched her pull on her jeans. Her bare back faced him. He studied the fine definition of her shoulders. He wanted to massage her the way she liked. He wondered if she'd ever let him touch her again.
